One eSIM or separate plans?

One eSIM

Keep the same data line and use one allowance across both countries. Check that Japan and South Korea are both listed in Plan details; an Asia label alone is not enough.

Separate eSIMs

Choose a different allowance for each stay, which may cost less. Switch data lines when you change countries. Unused data on a Japan-only plan cannot be used in Korea.

More on regional and local plans

Using your phone in Japan and South Korea

Getting around Japan
Japan Travel by NAVITIME helps you plan train journeys, including routes that prioritize your rail pass.
Getting around Korea
Use NAVER Maps for directions in English and k.ride to book taxis as an international visitor.
Before you fly
Install and sign in to your apps, then save hotel addresses and screenshots of your airport-to-hotel directions for offline access.

Do you need a local phone number?

Maps, translation and internet messaging work over data. These eSIMs do not include a Japanese or Korean number, regular calls or SMS.

Booking restaurants in Korea? CATCHTABLE Global lets you sign up without a Korean number using Google, Apple or email, then book at participating restaurants.

Some services still require a local number or SMS verification. Check the apps and bookings you plan to use before choosing a data-only plan.

Before you go

What changes when I arrive in South Korea?

With one plan covering both countries, keep the same travel data line selected. With separate plans, enable the Korean eSIM and select it for mobile data. Follow its roaming instructions.

Can I use my Japan eSIM again after visiting Korea?

Yes, if it still has data and validity remaining. Its validity keeps running during your time in Korea, even with the line off. Add Japan again in Edit trip so both visits and the gap between them are checked.

Can I share data with a laptop or another phone?

Open Change under Your usage and select sharing to require hotspot support. Sharing uses your eSIM’s data and only works while the devices stay nearby.

Will these eSIMs work on my phone?

Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible.

Check your phone

When should I install and activate these eSIMs?

Install with reliable internet before departure and keep each travel line off until its covered part of the trip begins. The live plans we list start validity on first connection in a covered destination. Check each selected plan’s activation deadline after purchase.

Installation and activation guide

Can I keep my usual number?

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, keep your home line for its number and use the travel eSIM for data. Disable home-line data roaming and automatic data switching. Calls and SMS, including verification texts, depend on your home carrier and may incur charges.

Keep your number abroad
