Count your arrival and departure days when choosing validity. For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, think about maps, train searches and translation between Wi-Fi stops. Video, photo backups and laptop sharing can use much more data, so allow extra if those are part of your plans. Check the selected plan’s hotspot support before sharing with another device.

Explore multi-country routes

You do not need a new eSIM just because you change cities within Japan. Keep using your selected Japan plan while it has data and validity remaining. Check its network partners in Details; reception depends on your location and device, and continuous coverage along a train route is not guaranteed.

Install on Wi-Fi before departure so you are ready when you arrive in Japan. Your installation instructions appear in My eSIMs after payment. Keep the travel eSIM switched off until you reach a covered destination. Understand installation and activation timing.

The live plans we list start their validity on the first connection in a covered destination. Installation alone does not start the clock. Each plan also has an activation deadline after purchase; check Details before buying. Enable the eSIM and its data roaming when you arrive.

Keep your home SIM for your number and choose the travel eSIM for mobile data, if your phone supports both lines together. Turn off home-line data roaming and automatic data switching. Your carrier may charge for calls and SMS. Set up your two lines.

Keep your home SIM enabled to receive texts sent to your usual number. Delivery abroad depends on your home carrier, roaming settings and the service sending the code; it is not guaranteed by the travel eSIM. Check your carrier’s roaming charges and set up an authenticator or backup codes before leaving.

All currently listed plans support hotspot sharing. Up to 5G is available on selected networks and plans. Speeds depend on your destination, device, coverage and network conditions.

These plans provide mobile data only, without a Japanese phone number or a calls/SMS allowance. WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet calling and messaging apps work over data. A booking or service that requires a Japanese number or SMS verification will still need another way to verify you.
