One eSIM

Keep one data line for Italian cities and Swiss connections. Check that both countries appear in Plan details; a Europe label alone does not confirm Switzerland coverage.

Separate eSIMs

Choose an allowance for each stay, which may suit a longer Italy trip with a short Swiss visit. Switch lines at the border; unused Italian data cannot move to the Swiss plan.

Using your phone in Italy and Switzerland

Trains in Italy: Use the Trenitalia app to manage train tickets and check journey updates before your connection north.
Swiss connections: SBB Mobile helps you check onward trains, buses and boats, so you can plan the journey beyond your arrival station.
Before a mountain journey: Open your tickets and save your hotel address and arrival directions before boarding; a tunnel is a poor place to look them up.

Crossing the Alps by train?

Install your eSIMs while you have reliable internet. If you chose separate plans, label the lines Italy and Switzerland so you can select the right one for data on arrival.

A shared plan can keep the same data line through both countries. It still relies on local reception, so keep essential directions available offline for tunnels and mountain stretches.

What if I return to Italy after Switzerland?

Add Italy again in Edit trip. The same Italian eSIM may cover both visits if it has enough data and remains valid through the time spent in Switzerland.

Should I include a short Swiss stop?

Yes, if you need mobile data there. Add Switzerland even when it is only a short visit, so the comparison checks coverage instead of assuming an Italian plan will work.

Can I share data with a laptop or another phone?

Can I keep my usual number?

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, keep your home line for its number and use the travel eSIM for data. Disable home-line data roaming and automatic data switching. Calls and SMS, including verification texts, depend on your home carrier and may incur charges.
