Keep the number on your home line
Buying a data-only travel eSIM does not move your existing number or cancel your home mobile plan. Keep that plan active if you want its number to remain available. ShrimpToast’s travel plans do not include a new number or a calls and SMS allowance.
Supported combinations of physical SIMs and eSIMs vary by phone and purchase region. Being able to store several profiles does not mean the phone can use all of them at once. Check your device’s dual-SIM instructions and carrier unlock before buying.
Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data
In your phone’s SIM settings, select the travel line for mobile data. Enable data roaming on that line if the installation instructions require it. Turn home-line data roaming off and disable automatic data switching.
You can leave the home line enabled for its number, but these data settings do not prevent all roaming charges. Calls, voicemail and SMS are governed by your home carrier’s terms. If you do not need the number during the trip, turning the home line off is another option; ordinary calls and SMS to it will then be unavailable on the phone.
Internet messaging and ordinary SMS use different services
Internet calling and messaging apps use the available internet connection, including travel data or Wi-Fi. Ordinary carrier calls and SMS still rely on a voice or SMS service, such as your home line.
Check your apps before leaving and avoid changing registered numbers unnecessarily. Services that need a new SMS verification may still need access to the home number. For important conversations, agree on an internet-based backup with the people you need to reach.
Prepare a backup for verification codes
Keeping the home SIM enabled may let you receive verification texts abroad, but delivery depends on its carrier, roaming availability and the sender. The travel eSIM cannot guarantee bank or two-factor codes sent to a different line.
Before departure, check your carrier’s international SMS availability and charges. Where supported, set up an authenticator or recovery codes and keep them somewhere you can access securely. Test the alternative sign-in method while you are still at home.
Check the setup again after you land
Confirm which line is selected for data and review the labels before changing roaming settings. On a compatible iPhone, the default voice line and the mobile-data line can be different; Android menus depend on the device.
If an unexpected charge appears on your home bill, your home carrier is the source for the charge details. For a problem with your purchased travel data, open that eSIM in My eSIMs and choose Get help.
