Why multi-country eSIM shopping gets confusing
A plan for France is not automatically a plan for Italy. Country plans cover their listed destinations, while regional plans can cover several stops with one purchase. Even a familiar label such as Europe is not a coverage promise: check every country on your route, including short stopovers where you want mobile data.
Then there is the tradeoff between money and effort. Separate local plans can cost less or offer more data in the place you need it. A regional plan may spare you extra installations and changes of data line. Compare the total for the trip, rather than the cheapest starting price on each page.
Time matters too. A plan with plenty of data can still expire before your last stop. Count the elapsed days between its first and last use, including a gap or a return visit. Write down the route, days and likely phone use before comparing allowances.
One eSIM or several?
One regional eSIM
Install once and keep the same data line across included destinations. The fixed-data regional plans in our catalog use one allowance across their coverage: you do not receive a fresh allowance at each border. This can suit a quick-moving trip where fewer setup steps matter more than the last dollar of savings.
Several local eSIMs
Choose an allowance for each country and change your mobile-data line when you move. This can cost less or put more data into a longer stop, but each separate eSIM needs installation and has its own expiry. Unused data on one does not transfer to another.

Start with your habits, not the number of borders. Maps, messages and bookings usually call for less data than video, photo backups and long social feeds. Download offline maps and entertainment before leaving Wi-Fi. Hotel Wi-Fi can reduce mobile use, but allow for arrival days and journeys when it is unavailable.
Hotspot use needs a separate thought: a laptop may upload files or download updates while you are only checking email. Choose a plan that permits hotspot and estimate the work you expect to do away from Wi-Fi. A regional allowance can be used unevenly between its included countries; separate eSIM allowances cannot be pooled.
ShrimpToast’s Normal starting assumption is 0.65 GB per day. Over 12 days that is 7.8 GB, or 9.36 GB with our 20% buffer. These are planning assumptions, not measurements of your apps. The buffer gives everyday variation some room; regular video calls or streaming may need a higher profile.
What happens when you cross a border?
With a regional eSIM
Keep the travel eSIM selected for data. In an included destination, your phone will generally find an available partner network automatically, with data roaming enabled as instructed for that eSIM. Reconnection can take time and depends on local reception. You do not normally reinstall just because you crossed a border.
With separate eSIMs
Select the next destination’s eSIM for mobile data in your phone settings. Give each line a useful name when you install it, and keep the previous eSIM if you will return while its plan remains valid. Check your home line’s roaming settings separately so it does not unexpectedly supply data.
When a regional eSIM may not be the best choice
A regional plan is a poor fit if it leaves out a stop, expires too early, or costs much more than suitable local plans. Uneven stays matter too: two days of sightseeing followed by a month of laptop work may call for a different allowance in each place. If you spend most of the trip in one country, compare a local carrier as well.

Before you choose: common questions
Can one eSIM work in several countries?
Yes, when its plan includes those countries. Check the exact coverage list and validity. A regional or global name alone does not guarantee every stop on your itinerary is included.
Do I reinstall it at every border?
Usually not with a regional eSIM covering both destinations. Keep that line selected for data and follow its roaming instructions. With separate country eSIMs, change the selected data line when you move.
Is one regional eSIM always cheaper?
No. It may save installations without having the lowest price. Our planner compares eligible setups from our own catalog and shows the cheapest alternative when it differs from the recommendation.
Can my phone store multiple eSIMs?
Many compatible phones can store several profiles, but storage and the number active at once depend on the model. Check your manufacturer’s guidance; storing several does not mean using all of them for data simultaneously.

Add it again in travel order. A plan used across both visits must remain valid through the gap, and its data allowance must cover both visits.
Can I keep my normal number?
On a supported dual-SIM phone, your home line can stay active while the travel eSIM provides data. Home-line calls, texts and charges depend on your carrier. A data-only travel plan does not include ordinary calls or SMS.
