One eSIM or separate plans?

One eSIM

Use one data line in Australia and New Zealand when both are explicitly included. Set your actual dates so its validity lasts through the flight and your second stay.

Separate eSIMs

Match each allowance to your time in that country, especially when one road trip is longer. Change data lines after arrival; unused Australian data cannot move to a New Zealand-only plan.

Using your phone in Australia and New Zealand

Sydney and New South Wales
Use Transport for NSW’s trip planner for train, bus and ferry connections if this is part of your Australian stay.
Driving in New Zealand
Check NZTA’s Journey Planner for roadworks, incidents and travel updates before setting off.
Before leaving town
Download maps for your next driving leg and save accommodation details, car-hire information and booking references for offline access.

Will you have reception on a road trip?

Country coverage does not mean every rural road has a signal. Tourism New Zealand specifically notes gaps in some rural and wilderness areas.

Check the networks listed in Plan details and the relevant operator’s coverage map for your driving route. Keep essential maps offline, and download large files on Wi-Fi before a long day on the road.

Before you go

Does an Australian local eSIM work in New Zealand?

Only if New Zealand is also included in that package. The comparison checks the two countries separately and does not assume coverage from an Oceania label.

What if I have a long break between the two countries?

Add dates for both stays. A shared eSIM needs validity through the whole elapsed trip; separate plans may activate at different arrivals, subject to each activation deadline.

Can I share data with a laptop or another phone?

Open Change under Your usage and select sharing to require hotspot support. Sharing uses your eSIM’s data and only works while the devices stay nearby.

Will these eSIMs work on my phone?

Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible.

Check your phone

When should I install and activate these eSIMs?

Install with reliable internet before departure and keep each travel line off until its covered part of the trip begins. The live plans we list start validity on first connection in a covered destination. Check each selected plan’s activation deadline after purchase.

Can I keep my usual number?

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, keep your home line for its number and use the travel eSIM for data. Disable home-line data roaming and automatic data switching. Calls and SMS, including verification texts, depend on your home carrier and may incur charges.
