eSIMs for digital nomads

Data that can keep up with your trip.

Changing bases means balancing everyday phone use with work away from reliable Wi-Fi. Plan enough mobile data for the moves, without assuming it replaces your home broadband.

Plan my next bases

Plan for the days between reliable desks

A nomad’s mobile connection has two jobs: everyday travel data and a way to work when the usual Wi-Fi is unavailable. Those jobs need different allowances. Think about arrival days, moves between apartments and the occasional café work session, rather than assuming every day will look like a day at home.

Separate your baseline needs from expensive tasks such as video meetings, file uploads and backups. If mobile data will be your main connection, check recent laptop and phone usage over a representative working week. A generic travel estimate is a starting point, not a substitute for that measurement.

One plan between bases, or a plan for each stay?

Frequent moves

A regional plan can reduce installations across included countries. Its allowance follows you, which helps when work falls unevenly across the route. Check that the entire span from first use to last fits its validity, including time spent somewhere else in between.

A longer base

A country plan or local carrier may be more economical for a month in one place. Local service may also suit a need for a local number or recurring data. Compare those offers separately: ShrimpToast’s planner searches its travel catalog, not local contracts.

An example in practice

Work / Hotspot is a starting estimate, not a promise that mobile data can replace daily office Wi-Fi.

Compare this route

Hotspot is a feature, not a work guarantee

Choose a plan that supports hotspot before counting on a laptop connection. Background updates and cloud sync can consume data even when the task in front of you looks small. Pause large transfers until Wi-Fi is available, and keep a charger handy for longer tethering sessions.

Work / Hotspot in ShrimpToast starts at 2.5 GB per day and adds a 20% buffer. That is 60 GB over a 20-day example. Your calls, uploads and Wi-Fi access may put you well above or below it. The usage guide in the planner lets you think through activities before comparing plans.

Arrange a fallback before the important call

Coverage in a country does not verify the signal inside your apartment or the quality of a video meeting. Check your accommodation’s connection and identify a coworking or other reliable alternative for critical work. A 5G-capable plan is not a speed guarantee.

Confirm employer VPN and travel requirements separately. Mobile data does not promise a particular internet exit location or access to every company system. When you change bases, check the purchased plan’s remaining allowance and expiry before relying on it for the next workday.

Before you choose: common questions

Is 20 GB enough for remote work?

It depends on calls, uploads and Wi-Fi access. Our Work / Hotspot estimate starts at 2.5 GB per day before a 20% buffer: 20 GB is roughly eight days at that assumed rate, before the buffer. Frequent video calls or large files may need much more.

Can I hotspot my laptop?

Work / Hotspot filters for plans that support sharing. Your phone, signal and battery still matter. Check your employer’s security and VPN requirements separately.

Regional or country plans?

Compare the route and length of each stay. A regional plan can reduce setup; a long stay in one country may be better served by a local carrier, especially if you need recurring data or a local number.

What happens if I run out?

Open your eSIM’s help flow to see compatible data additions. Availability depends on the purchased profile. If none fit, choose another plan; allowances are not pooled between separate eSIMs.

Where will your next desk be?
