A few things worth knowing before you trust a tiny shrimp with your phone service.

What exactly is an eSIM?

A digital SIM you install on a compatible phone. It connects you to mobile data without swapping a physical SIM. Our travel plans are data-only: use them for maps, browsing and apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime.

Will this work on my phone?

You need an eSIM-compatible phone that is unlocked for use with other carriers. Support can vary by model and where you bought it. Check for Add eSIM in your phone’s settings and confirm that your carrier has unlocked it before buying.

Can I keep my usual phone number?

Yes. The travel eSIM does not replace your number. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, keep your home line enabled for calls and texts and select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Turn off data roaming on your home line and automatic data switching. Your home carrier’s call and text charges still apply.

Can I still receive texts and 2FA codes?

Often, yes, if your home line stays enabled and your carrier supports receiving SMS abroad. The travel eSIM itself does not receive ordinary SMS. Check your home carrier’s roaming rules and charges before leaving; bank and other verification texts are not guaranteed to arrive.

When should I install my eSIM?

Install it on reliable Wi-Fi before you travel, following the instructions in My eSIMs. Keep the travel eSIM turned off until you need it, especially if your home country is covered by the plan. Leave your usual SIM in place.

When does my plan start?

The plans we offer start when your eSIM first connects to a supported network in a covered destination. Installing it alone does not start the clock. There is also a deadline to activate after purchase, shown in the plan details before you buy.

Do I need data roaming turned on?

Yes, on the travel eSIM when you want to use it. Select it for mobile data, enable its data roaming, and follow your installation instructions. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM and turn off automatic data switching to avoid using your home plan for travel data.

Can I use hotspot/tethering?

When your plan supports it, yes. Check the hotspot details before buying and tell us if you will be sharing data with a laptop or another device. We’ll match plans that support it and allow for the extra data use. Hotspot data comes out of the same allowance.

What happens if my eSIM doesn’t work?

Open your purchase in My eSIMs and choose Get help. Guided troubleshooting checks your setup and offers another supported network where available. If that does not resolve it, we offer a refund under our refund policy. Keep the eSIM installed while troubleshooting.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. An unused eSIM qualifies for a full refund of that eSIM’s price. If service worked and later becomes unusable, we refund the unused portion of its data allowance. Refunds apply to the affected eSIM, not automatically the whole bundle. You’ll see the amount before confirming.

You absolutely can. We do the comparison for your whole trip: coverage, likely data use, validity, price and setup. You see the easiest and cheapest sensible options with the tradeoffs explained. Fewer tabs. More time to decide where to eat.

Why might ShrimpToast recommend more than one eSIM?

One plan may not cover every stop, or a combination may cost meaningfully less. We compare regional and local plans, including the number of installations and switches. When one eSIM is worth a small premium for less setup, we explain that too. Each eSIM has its own data allowance.
